Looking for a Manhattan Injury Lawyer?
If You Need a Lawyer to Represent You in Your Personal Injury Lawsuit, no problem. There will be plenty of lawyers ready to take your case. But the reality is that the best lawyers will look for and get, the best cases. What you want is the best injury lawyer for your case that you can get. It's not always easy and you'll need to do a little homework. Remember, though, to not wait too long: Your case can be barred by the statute of limitations if filed too late.
Here are Some Ideas You have been injured in some way and you believe it may be the fault of someone else. What do you do? Well, I am not an expert and I don't practice injury law (Law cannot be practiced over the Internet anyway), but here are some ideas on the subject. First, I can tell you what not to do. Do not call a lawyer just because he or she has the biggest ad on the Interstate billboard. Ditto for TV ads and the like. These lawyers are often good but you need more than a big ad to go on. Not every lawyer can reliably handle trial law and personal injury.
A few questions to ask injury attorneys you interview: Do you practice in this area of the law? Medical malpractice, Auto accidents? Aviation Litigation? Not all lawyers are litigators and not all lawyers concentrate on trial law. Find out if the attorney has done your kind of case. What is your background and how much experience do you have with cases like mine? Are you on any special Bar Association Committees involving this area? Do you teach any courses in this area of the law? Why should I choose you / your firm?
Doing a little footwork yourself: Visit a local law school library and explain to the research librarian that you are looking for a trial lawyer in a special kind of case. Have the librarian check daily court cases and see who is routinely doing this kind of case. Ask to see course books from the local trial lawyers courses for attorneys of trial law. See who teaches the trial law continuing education courses for the local Bar Association. Check into the Bar Association Courses: Who are the lawyers that teach other lawyers? Who wrote the course books? If you call the famous teacher lawyer and he or she is too busy or too expensive, ask for a recommendation. Lawyers know how is good in their field. Check with the state disciplinary board to see if an individual attorney has been censured for violating ethical rules. This information may be o the Internet. Go to the county courthouse and find the court administrator's office. Ask around. The people who work there every day know who is good.
What IS an Injury Attorney Anyway? This term "injury attorney" usually denotes lawyers who take injury cases for the plaintiff, or person who believes they are injured and wants to sue. It does not mean that the attorney has a specialized degree. There are trial law certification programs and you can inquire about those. Injury attorneys are often paid on a contingency fee basis which means that they get paid only if the case ends in a verdict for the plaintiff or a settlement. You will still probably be asked to pay certain fees and costs. After you discuss the case, the attorney is free to take it or decline it. If s/he is willing to represent you, you will be asked to sign an agreement authorizing her or him to represent you. Financial arrangements should be spelled out here. Remember that you need to see an attorney as early as possible after the injury so that your case in not barred by the applicable statute of limitations law.
